Project Officer Job Purpose

  • To provide technical expertise and support for activities and implementation of the Sustainable Laboratory Quality Systems (SLQS) project in Kenya

Job Title: Project Officer (Laboratory Mentor)

Project Officer Job Responsibilities

  • Project implementation in the coast region
  • Ensure implementation plan is completed and in line with the workplan in all the project areas.
  • Support the project counties to, adopt National Laboratory Policies and implement within Counties-
  • Laboratory and Biosafety Policies. Develop County/facility specific , Strategic Plans, Guidelines and SOPs
  • Work with counties and HF to ensure timely submission of required national reports for laboratory services to NPHLs, NASCOP, KEMSA etc.
  • Support laboratory commodities management at HF level to reduce interruptions in HIV/TB diagnosis and management
  • Provide technical assistance to the project HFs to conduct
  • Quality Assurance for core HIV/TB-related laboratory testing and ensure establishment of EQA systems to support this testing.
  • Ensure all training materials are available; stationery,
    equipment, lab items etc
  • Ensure training timetables, notes, handouts and reference materials are prepared and available
  • Ensure transport is available for facilitators and participants partial
  • Facilitate in trainings of the project including practical sessions of the workshop where applicable
  • Prepare training workshop reports and ensure they are reviewed and shared with the relevant recipients.
  • Mentorship of HFs on SLMTA process
    Conduct mentorship of HFs undergoing SLMTA process in the relevant Counties and any other project County as directed by the project manager
  • Coordinate external mentors and ensure they complete assignments according to the work plan
  • Ensure mentorship reports are prepared and reviewed by the project M&E officer and project manager
  • Ensure payments for mentors are raised, paid & documented partial
  • Reports for the project activities
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports of the project
  • Ensure the reports are reviewed and submitted to the relevant authorities
  • Ensure project monthly reports are prepared, reviewed and submitted to M&E unit
  • Ensure relevant project data entry and analysis for the project

Qualifications For Project Officer Jobs


  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences
  • MUST be registered by KMLTTB
  • Holder of a valid practice license.


  • 5 years post-qualification experience
  • Experience in ISO15189 standards and training and knowledge in accreditation processes for laboratories is essential.


  • Medical laboratory technical skills including QA/QC,
  • ICT proficiency
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work within deadlines.
  • Attention to detail

  • Thorough understanding of all Amref Health Africa Policies and Procedures – HR, Finance,Procurement, Transport, Per Diem, Communications, Asset and Disposal, ICT, etc.

Work Environment

  • Normal office environment at the work station. Will be expected to travel extensively (>50% of the time) and may be required to stay longer at the project sites

Hours of Work

  • Job holder may be required to work outside normal working hours due to the nature of the work in general
