About IBM Research – Africa
IBM Research – Africa is IBM’s 12th global research lab and the first industrial research facility on the continent of Africa. With facilities in Kenya and South Africa, IBM Research – Africa is driving innovation and socio-economic development by developing commercially-viable solutions to transform lives and enable new business opportunities in key areas such as water, agriculture, transportation, healthcare, financial inclusion, education, energy, security and e-government.
First announced by IBM’s CEO Ginni Rometty in 2012, the Nairobi facility was officially inaugurated by Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta in November,20 13. The Nairobi facility is supported by the Kenya ICT Authority. The South African branch of IBM Research – Africa was announced in March 2015 and will be collocated with Wits University in the Tshimologong Precinct technology hub in Bramfontein, Johannesburg.
IBM Research – Africa is actively engaging with Africa’s innovation ecosystem to kick start new business opportunities and ensure the full commercial viability of its solutions and services. Entrepreneurs, developers and business partners are a key part of IBM’s research programs and go-to-market strategy in Africa.
Employing some of the best scientists from around the world, many from the African diaspora, IBM Research is a key investor in skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Africa and is partnering with universities across the continent to develop and hire top talent.

The world continues to get “smaller” and “flatter.” But we see now that being connected isn’t enough. Fortunately, something else is happening that holds new potential: the planet is becoming smarter but unsecure. That is, intelligence is being infused into the way the world literally works — into the systems, processes and infrastructure that help billions of people work and live.
Across the world, a distinctly different group of leaders is announcing its arrival. They are making decisions based on evidence, not on habit or opinion or “gut.” They are anticipating, rather than merely reacting, to events. They are seizing competitive advantage, but at least as often, they are re-framing the issues–in unexpected, often counter-intuitive ways. For example, we used to manually process workflow on various documents, potentially over a hundred per shipment sent by an exporter to facilitate supply-chain/trade. Now traders and governments endorsed new technologies to enable a secure, trusted and immutable document workflow to support trade. Marketers used to see you as a “segment.”
Since its establishment, IBM Research – Africa focused on addressing some of the world most difficult problems (in education, financial services, healthcare, public sectors etc) in Africa and in other emerging economies. Our goal is to develop original, novel and smarter system to
- create opportunities for quality education and lifelong learning in Africa;
- drive sustainable economic growth and transformation in Africa;
- ensure good governance in Africa; and
- save people’s lives in Africa.
IBM Research scientists are evaluated on three broad metrics: impact, engagement, and eminence. These metrics, in the context of a commercial research lab in an emerging market, create a unique combination of roles and responsibilities for a research scientist in Blockchain, Distributed Systems, and Cognitive Computing.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
- At least 3 years experience in realizing technologies and as an entrepreneurial spirit.
- At least 3 years experience in engineering background focused and specialization on distributed systems, security, software engineering, machine learning, and algorithms.
- At least 3 years experience in as a research scientist manifested in a proven track record of published papers.
- Applicants must have strong programming and quantitative skills.
- The ideal candidates will work in a world-wide eco-system of IBM Researchers, IBM business units and the African governments, and will have a unique opportunity to interact with world-renowned scientists and technical leaders around the globe.
- The ideal researcher has outstanding communication skills and the ability to develop original research agendas, while still being a team player in a collaborative and supportive environment.
Preferred Technical and Professional Experience
- Masters or Doctorate Degree (preferred) in Computer Science but are open to related areas such as EE, Mathematics, Physics, etc.
Up to 50% or 3 days a week (home on weekends – based on project requirements)
