Senior Program Associate, Financial Inclusion Program (Nairobi, Kenya)

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) discovers and promotes effective solutions to global poverty problems.

IPA designs, rigorously evaluates, and refines these solutions and their applications together with decision-makers to ensure that the evidence created is used to improve opportunities for the world’s poor.

Since our founding in 2002, IPA has worked with over 350 leading academics to conduct over 450 evaluations in 51 countries.

This research has informed hundreds of successful programs that now impact millions of individuals worldwide.

The Financial Inclusion Program oversees a portfolio of over 125 ongoing and completed rigorous research projects testing ways to help the poor manage their money and benefit from access to financial services.

The Program supports the creation and dissemination of evidence in the sector through a series of initiatives applying randomized evaluations to test product design innovations and solutions to foster financial capability globally and in the US.

The work of the Program includes managing competitively-allocated funds which support research projects on financial inclusion; developing new research projects in partnership with financial institutions, with the goal of testing and replicating innovative solutions to foster financial inclusion; and disseminating financial inclusion research results through events and written publications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Program Associate will work closely with the Financial Inclusion Program on policy communication and new research project development.

This position will report to the Senior Program Manager, Financial Inclusion.

The Senior Program Associate’s core responsibilities are as follows:
​ Work closely with the Financial Inclusion Program team to lead the creation of written publications across the Program, including writing​ blog posts and op-eds
Design and produce policy publications communicating IPA’s work in financial inclusion, and author thematic briefs around key areas and findings in the financial inclusion sector
Develop content for the Program’s microsite and support research teams with maintaining updated research results, summaries, publications
Lead collaboration between the Program and the IPA External Relations team on relevant communications tasks
​ Track, manage and update a database of ongoing projects and opportunities in the Financial Inclusion sector, with a particular focus on East Africa
Support the FIP Program on project development activities in the sector led by the Program and by IPA Country Programs with particular focus on East Africa
Serve as the liaison between the Program, IPA Country Programs, and potential partners in East Africa
Support Program Managers and the East Africa Director to plan and execute sector specific policy activities related to Financial Inclusion
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in economics, journalism, communications, social sciences, public policy, or related fields
One to two years of relevant experience or a Master’s degree in one of the fields listed above
Interest in and knowledge of international development, or development/behavioral economics
Ability to present complex information in clear simple language and to effectively translate academic research into clear policy lessons
Excellent writing and copy-editing skills, including experience with policy writing
Ability to build and manage high-level relationships with partner organizations and represent the Financial Inclusion Program at events and workshops in the region
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Fluency and excellent communication skills in English
Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and team player
Ability to master new software and online tools quickly
Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude
Experience living in a developing country a plus
Experience with basic HTML and/or Salesforce a plus
Strong analytical skills a plus
