Job Description

Job Title: Laboratory Technician

Work Location: School Based

Reports To: Head of Departments

Responsible For: Technical and support service to the Science Department, consisting of biology, chemistry and physics
Job Purpose: Supporting the work of science teachers and their students to ensure that they:
make the best use of the time they spend in the laboratory;
use equipment safely; and,
accurately record the results of their work.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Liaising with academic staff to discuss timetables, equipment requirements and work plans;
  • Running trials of experiments prior to classes and then demonstrating techniques for experiments;
  • Preparing equipment and chemicals before lessons;
  • Maintaining and repairing equipment and laboratory apparatus;
  • Record keeping, e.g. for students’ practical sessions, tracking methods, results, etc;
  • Ensuring that equipment is properly cleaned and that chemicals, and other materials are appropriately stored;
  • Supporting the work of teachers in classes and laboratory sessions and giving technical advice to staff and students;
  • Working with individual students and supporting them on projects;
  • Managing the stock control of chemicals and equipment;
  • Ensuring that all health and safety procedures are understood and followed correctly;
  • Coordinating work in the laboratory to ensure efficient use is made of expensive pieces of equipment.

Education / Qualifications

  • Educated to KCSE level with a mean grade of D+
  • Certificate in Science Laboratory Technology from recognized institution


  • Diploma in Science
  • Laboratory Technology or equivalent related professional qualification


  • 2 years’ experience of work in a busy institution


  • 1 year’s experience of working in a school/educational environment
  • Experience in sampling, measuring, recording and analyzing results
  • Previous or past experience in budgeting and ordering resources, conducting risk assessments and carrying out student supervision

Skills / Knowledge / Aptitude

  • Knowledge of operation of standard school science laboratory equipment
  • Knowledge of Laboratory procedures such as preparation of resources
  • Understanding of Health and Safety regulations regarding chemicals and equipment
  • Confident in chemistry, biology and physics techniques
  • Able to provide technical support to teachers and students
  • Time management skills and the ability to prioritize work
  • Attention to detail and good numeracy skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written
  • Motivation


  • Willingness to tolerate cultural, educational and religious diversity in the work place
  • Versatile enough to work in a peri-urban set up


  • Willingness to undertake further training/development opportunities
