Background

UN Women is the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women with the objective of providing support to national partners in implementation of international commitments; financial and technical assistance to innovative programs and strategies that promote women’s empowerment and gender equality; and leadership and coordination in UN country teams on their response to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

UN Women Regional Office for Eastern and Southern Africa (ESARO), through its work on women’s economic empowerment, has made considerable advances leading in the area of gender equality in rural women technologies, and continues working to scale up these successes. Work on innovations, and gender and resilience in general is also gaining increasing attention. Improving women’s access to innovative technologies in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) presents great potential for shared economic growth and could drastically reduce poverty levels in these countries, as well as strengthen resilience.

As part of this workline, UN Women ESARO has launched a project in Kenya which aims to increase access to postharvest technologies for women farmers. This is a collaboration which is undertaken jointly with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Stockholm Environmental Institute (SEI) and is being implemented with a grant provided by the Rockefeller Foundation. The project will explore women’s barriers to access to postharvest technologies: adjust existing technologies to meet the needs of women farmers. It also includes a component of capacity building of women farmers. We are also collaborating with UNDP-UNEP-PEI on costing, and addressing, the gender gaps in agriculture in the ESA region. In addition, we are forwarding the innovation agenda in the region. All these activities require specific management and coordination support.

UN Women ESARO is seeking a WEE Program Consultant to support the WEE Team in general follow-up on the resilience and gender agenda; implementation, coordination and management of the Post-harvest initiative; the Cost of the Gender Gap study – in the lead-up, execution, and post-event phases, including reporting; and management of the innovation agenda in the region.

He/she will work as part of the WEE team and under the overall guidance of the WEE Advisor. S/he will also be in close communication with focal points from the partners involved in the implementation of the Project and the wider WEE set of partners.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implementation, coordination and management of the Post-harvest initiative – in the lead-up, execution, and post-event phases, coordination and management of the Postharvest project, providing essential support to ensure the effective delivery and implementation of the initiative; consistent with UNWOMEN rules and regulations, including:
    • Partnership management, communication and coordination for the project;
    • Maintain knowledge repository; write up of cases and prepare inputs;
    • Ensure information and updates are shared with all partners of the project;
    • Organize and follow-up (including minuting and filing of minutes and records) regular meetings;
    • Monitoring and supporting compliance with donor requirements and reporting results including:
    • Maintain the donor reporting matrix; tracking donor contracts to ensure timely reporting, UN Women’s contractual obligations and other delivery and reporting requirements;
    • Support the implementing partners in timely preparation of reports – follow up with partners for timely delivery of results based programming; consistently review partners’ reports to obtain the information required for reporting and quality control;
    • Draw good practices and knowledge emerging from the initiative and document them for learning;
    • Identify scale up/optimization opportunities in the projects and disseminate them to inform adaptation of ongoing programs, development of new component in the projects and/or inform new programs/activities;
    • Act as primary liaison with partners on evaluation related matters;
    • Disseminate M&E findings and information to partners and relevant stakeholders;
    • Support to programme development.
  • Managing the regional resilience and gender agenda, including thematic follow-up, contribution to concept development, technical advisory, drawing on the Rockefeller project, liaison with country offices;
  • Support the innovation agenda in the region;
  • Programme support to the Cost of the Gender Gap study;
  • Support in any other duties as requested.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in development-related studies (Business or Public Administration, Economics, Political Sciences or Social Sciences would be desirable, but is not required).

Experience:

  • At least five years of progressively responsible programme support /management experience in an international team environment;
  • Experience with successful coordination and management of programmes and partnerships, preferably in the UN system;
  • Experience in reporting monitoring, evaluation and results-based management, including donor reporting;
  • Experience of supporting capacity of partner organizations in the areas of planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting;
  • Demonstrated experience in capturing learning, documenting and sharing knowledge;
  • Familiarity with innovative approaches;
  • Knowledge and Experience of UN systems for finance and procurement;
  • Documented team-player with strong track record of timely and high quality delivery;
  • Experience in the usage of software packages including Microsoft Office packages.

Language:

  • Fluency in English is required, knowledge of another UN language is an added advantag
