Position: INTERN – UNEP Writer, Communications Assistant

About UNEP

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The Role

The UNEP Writer, Communications Assistant/ Knowledge Networks and Library Services Unit internship is for 6 months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Duties of the Intern Writer Position at UNEP

Responsibilities of the Intern will include drafting press releases, speeches and editorials as well as Carrying out research and draft briefing documents while maintaining partner mailing lists and data bases. The Intern will also support the organization of high level events, dialogues and press conferences, contribute to the redesign of user experience and interface of digital products, produce social media messages and infographs and monitor and evaluate media pick up using Meltwater and other software.

Desired Competencies of the Intern Writer at UNEP

The candidate should speak and write clearly and effectively. Also, the intern should be able to listen to others, correctly interpret messages from others and respond appropriately, ask questions to clarify, and exhibit interest in having two-way communication. In addition, they should be able to tailor language, tone, style and format to match the audience, demonstrate openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Requirements for the Intern Position at UNEP

The suitable Candidate should be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable
