Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’ s Science Division is responsible for analyzing the state of the global environment, providing early warning information and assessing global and regional environmental trends to catalyze and promote international cooperation and action on the environment. This post is located in the Science Division at the Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Country Outreach, Technology & Innovation Branch and overall supervision of the Director, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:

Responsibilities

-Takes the lead to assure the proper management of electronic platforms related to environmental data and information; and contributes to integrated environmental assessments at global and regional levels, and in the development, management, implementation and maintenance of partnerships, networks and specialists key to keeping the global environment under review, and ensuring progress in the implementation of sustainable development objectives.

-Develops and/or strengthens engagement with UN Environment member states, and cultivates and/or strengthens strategic partnerships with institutions and experts in assessing global and regional environmental trends to catalyze and promote international cooperation and action on the environment.

-Contributes to the coordination of environmental, social and economic data and information in analyzing trends related to the environmental dimensions of sustainable development, and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and other internationally agreed global environmental goals.

-Coordinates activities related to budget and funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and ensures preparation of related documents/reports;

-Develops and monitors performance measures;

-Ensures that projects meet established time and cost parameters and standards of technical quality;

-Provides inputs to knowledge management policy development;

-Reviews user needs and directs information gathering from diverse sources to meet these needs;

-Develops strategy for and oversees the design and implementation of knowledge management and outreach initiatives;

-Manages/oversees multiple, concurrent and often disparate tasks for projects that often involve innovative approaches, dissimilar systems, services and content, integration and linkages;

-Ensures the development of standards, procedures and practices to ensure a stable and effective systems environment;

-Provides authoritative advice to senior managers on knowledge management and more particularly on assessments, national, regional and global data and information in a changing business environment and the implications of various alternatives, on business applications and other related issues;

-Identifies and plans for future needs; develops and disseminates best practices;

-Develops innovative solutions to resolve intricate problems that impact a critical area of the organization’s work;

-Supervises preparation of various inputs, for example, inputs to strategic policies, briefings for institutional communication an reporting, technical reports, data and information analysis background papers, substantial sections of reports and studies and outreach materials, including multimedia;

-Directs substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations etc.;

-Leads field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.;

-Manages outreach activities; designs and conducts training workshops, seminars, etc; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities;

-Establishes collaboration and partnerships with key officials at all levels inside and outside the organization;

-Responsible for the strategic analysis of survey initiatives;

-Responsible for the planning and management of marketing and communication plan of global information systems

-Coordinate technology development teams to implement information systems;

Provides inputs to knowledge management policy development;

-Performs any other related duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in information/knowledge management, communication, natural sciences, international relations or related field. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible working experience in planning, design, development, implementation and maintenance of knowledge and communication tools and strategies or related area of which at least three years should be at the international level. Experience in intergovernmental processes and communication is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the advertised post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Working knowledge of other UN languages is desirable
